My Life in French

École – De maternel jusqu'à 4ème année à Vancouver et puis de 5ème jusqu'à 12ème année à St. John's, NL, tous en immersion. À Vancouver j'ai plus souvent eu des professeurs francophones, mais à St. John's j'ai plus souvent eu des professeurs où Français n'était pas leur langue maternel. À l'université j'ai suivi plusiers cours de grammaire et de litérature fançaise ainsi que de l'histoire et de la culture francophone.

Travail – Avec Parcs Canada j'ai fallu travailler soit toujours en français (au Québec) ou moitié en français (en Nouvelle-Ecosse) durant les trois années que j'était embaucher. J'ai aussi travaillé avec l'Association Communautaire Francophone de St.-Jean pendant deux ans. Avec eux j'ai fallu travailler toujours en français en parlant et écrit. Avec tous mes autres emplois j'éssai d'utiliser le français quand il est voulu.

Voyages – J'ai souvent visité la belle province dans ma vie et j'ai même habité à Shawingan, qui est proche de Trois-Rivieres, pendant deux mois en 2003. J'ai visité les îles de St. Pierre et Miquelon trois fois; la première fois avec une groupe musicale et la deuxième fois avec une amie pour nos vacances. Les trois fois j'ai pris la position de traduiseur. J'ai aussi deux fois visité la France, chaque fois pour un mois. La première fois j'ai resté au Côte-d'Azur et le Provence et la deuxième fois j'ai vu la capitale, la Loire, la Normandie et le Brétagne.

School - From kindergarten until grade 4, I was schooled in Vancouver and from grade 5 until grade 12 I was school in St. John's, Newfoundland, all in French Immersion. I Vancouver I was more often instructed by native French speaking teachers, though in St. John's it was more often than not a teacher who had acquired French as a second language. In university I took a number of grammar and literature classes, as well as studying French history and culture.

Work - With Parks Canada, I was either working entirely in French (in Québec) or half in French (in Nova Scotia) during the three years I worked with them. I also spent two years working with the Francophone Association of St. John's where I worked entirely in French. With any other employment I have always tried to use my skills in French to their full benefit whenever I could.

Travel - I've often visited Québec and I lived there for a short period in 2003 while I worked with Parks Canada. I have been to St. Pierre and Miquelon three times;  once with a touring rock band and twice for vacations. Each time I ended up acting as translator for my traveling companions. I have twice visited France and have now seen the Côte-d'Azur, Provence, Paris, the Loire, Normandy and Britany.
